Tutorials
ICADL 2013 Tutorials provide an opportunity for in-depth learning on a very relevant topic or technology solution relevant to research or practice in digital libraries. These tutorials address a single topic in detail over a full day. The objective is to get experts in the field to engage members of the digital library community who may not be familiar with a relevant set of technologies or concepts. Our experts giving tutorials will cover the topic or solution to a level where in the attendees will take away sufficient knowledge to follow and further pursue the material beyond the tutorial.
ICADL runs three full-day tutorials on Day 1 of the ICADL 2013.These three tutorials run on parallel tracks on different topics of interest.
Tutorial 1: "Data Mining with Weka" by Dr. Ian Witten, Department of Computer Science, University of Waikato, New Zealand
Tutorial 2: "Text Mining" by Dr. K.V. Sreeram Murthy, CMD, Teqnium Consultancy Services, India
Tutorial 3: “Social Network Analysis: Concepts and Practice” by Dr. Srinath Srinivasa, IIIT, Bangalore, India.
Schedule: 9.30 AM to 11 AM; 11.30 AM to 1.00 PM; 2.30 PM to 4 PM
Profile of Tutorial Experts:
Dr. Ian Witten is a professor of computer science at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. He directs the New Zealand Digital Library research project. His research interests include information retrieval, machine learning, text compression, and programming by demonstration. He received an MA in Mathematics from Cambridge University, England; an MSc in Computer Science from the University of Calgary, Canada; and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Essex University, England.
Dr. Witten is a fellow of the ACM and of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He has published widely on digital libraries, machine learning, text compression, hypertext, speech synthesis and signal processing, and computer typography. He has written several books, including The Reactive Keyboard (1992) (Cambridge Series in Human Computer Interaction); Managing Gigabytes (1999); Data Mining (2000); “How to build a digital library” (2002); “ Web Dragons” (2006) all from Morgan Kaufmann.
Prof. Witten led the team that developed the two open source software suites: Weka-the Data mining software in Java and the Greenstone digital library software.
