About Bangalore
Bangalore also pronounced as Bengaluru—the capital of state of Karnataka is also famous by the sobriquets — “Silicon Valley of India” and “IT capital of India” and before that “Garden City of India” and “Pensioners' Paradise” and also “Pub City.” During the heady days of outsourcing and its aftermath in the US, “Bangalored” became a verb to be used to refer to people who were laid off from multinational companies because their job outsourced to India. IT firms in Bangalore employ about 35% of India's pool of 1 million IT professionals.
Located on the Deccan Plateau in the southeastern part of Karnataka, Bangalore is India's third most populous city and fifth-most populous urban agglomeration. Bangalore is among the top 10 preferred entrepreneurial locations in the world.
A demographically diverse city, Bangalore is a major economic and cultural hub and the second fastest growing major metropolis in India. Very cosmopolite in nature, Bangalore is sometimes also considered true microcosm of India—because of the diversity of languages and ethnicity of people of Bangalore.
It is the first city in India to get electricity in 1906 and is the scientific hub of India having the world-renowned and the oldest Research University, Indian Institute of Science, established in 1909. The other well known research institutes are the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, the Raman Research Institute, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, the National Center for Biological Sciences and the Indian Statistical Institute.
Bangalore is home to many well-recognized colleges and has the highest number of Engineering Colleges in India and numerous public sector heavy industries such as Bharath Electronics Limited (BEL), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT), Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), and others; technology companies such as Microsoft Research, Google, Yahoo and others are located in the city.
